South Eastern Regional College student Luke Hawthorne wowed the critics at the Institute of Carpenters Craft Competition in London recently and became the regional winner for Northern Ireland. Luke, who is currently completing his NVQ Level 2 in Wood Machining at the College's Ballynahinch Campus, was entered into the competition by lecturers Alan Garrett and Rodney McKee. Alan commented: “For the competition, Luke had to construct a sheeted door, hung on a frame; the quality of the work that he produced was excellent and the lecturers here at the Ballynahinch Campus are all delighted with Lukes achievement in the Institute of Carpenters competition, he is a hard worker and deserves the recognition.” Luke’s prize for winning the regional title was a certificate and cheque, Luke said: “I am pleased with my achievement at the Institute of Carpenters competition and would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to my lecturers at the College and also my employer Hugh J O’Boyle who supported me over the past year.”
